What Is the Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Test (MAT)?

The Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Test or the MAT is a short test which has 36 questions to be completed in 20 minutes. The test is given to those applying to entry level-jobs like apprentice programs, machine operators, and millwrights. The point of the test is to measure your aptitude for learning skills related to mechanical topics. The topics covered on the test include; basic physics, power tools, and maintenance of household objects.

How Do You Pass the Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Test?

The Ramsay MAT is different from other mechanical aptitude tests because the questions are vague which can easily confuse candidates. We approach this question understanding a basic principle: an object floating in a liquid displaces the amount of liquid equal to the object's weight. We can see that the boats in picture A and B are identical. Since, boat B has displaced less of the liquid, it means that the liquid is heavier.

A great way to think about it, is picturing a wooden boat floating in both honey and water. The boat which is in the honey will float higher in the liquid because it displaces less volume.

What Is the Ramsay MecTest?

The Ramsay MecTest is usually referred to as the Ramsay maintenance test. This test is used for more advanced journeyman positions. The test has about 60 questions and there is no time limit. That being said the amount of time taken to complete the test will be compared to other candidates. So, try not to take longer than an hour. The Ramsay MultiCraf Test is very similar to the MechTest in its format and is used for more advanced positions. The test has 60 questions with no time limit. How Are the Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Tests Scored?

The Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude test will be one of the first tools used by an employer in the selection process. You will get a score on the exam which will tell your employer if you are “qualified for the job. The criteria for qualification will be determined by the employer depending on the position. If you get an unqualified result you will immediately be removed from the selection process. It is important to not only qualify byt to score in the top 20-30%. Your employer will get a normed score comparing you to the other candidates who applied for the job, this will be your local distribution of scores.
