What Is an IBEW Electrician Apprentice?

The IBEW Electrical Apprenticeship Program is the training needed to become an electrician. The program is a joint venture between the International; Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). The apprenticeship includes blended learning through hands-on instruction, teacher taught classes, and digital media. In the apprenticeship program the students will work and go to school at the same time. This is a perfect opportunity for those students who prefer hands on learning rather than full time classroom work.

Are There Any Requirements Needed to Submit an Electrical Apprenticeship Application?

In order to apply for electrical apprenticeship you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED equivalency
  • Have proof that you passed an algebra course
  • Have your most recent transcript (high school or college

How Much Does an Electrician Make?

What is great about becoming an electrician is that this career is not going away any time soon. Your salary is dependent on how far along you are in the Journeyman process. Your salary will increase every 1000 hours you work which can be done between 6-12 months.

IBEW Apprenticeship Application Process

Step One: Application

Submit an application for the IBEW Apprenticeship Training Program which interests you. You may decide to focus on becoming a:

  • Inside Wireman
  • Outside Wireman
  • Technician (Sound and Communication)
  • Residential Wireman

Once you locate the apprenticeship program of interest to you, you will submit the application. Not all the programs have an online application. So be prepared to fill out a lengthy paper application. Have all pertinent information handy including your latest transcript and last four addresses.

Step Two: IBEW Apprenticeship Aptitude Test

This is the tool that will sift out quality applicants. Getting into an apprenticeship program is not easy. Those with the highest score on the test will be asked to interview first. The test is a multiple choice exam made up of two parts; Algebra and Functions, and Reading Comprehension.

Step Three: Interview

Be prepared to have some lag time between the test and the invitation for an interview. Those candidates that scored the highest on the electrical aptitude tests will be invited to a panel interview. The interviewers can include the director of the program, members of the local NECA union office, and instructors.

Step Four: Eligible for an IBEW Apprenticeship

If you excel on the test and the interview you will receive a letter informing you that you have been placed on a list of applicants eligible for an IBEW Apprenticeship program. The higher you score on the interview and the aptitude test the more likely you will be taken for an open spot in an IBEW apprenticeship program. If you are not selected within a two year period you will need to resubmit your application.
