What is the MAP Growth Test for Kindergarten and 1st Grade?
The MAP Growth K–2 Test is a computer-adaptive assessment designed to measure early math and reading skills in young learners. The same test is given to non-readers from ages 5–7 in kindergarten and first grade.

What subjects are covered on the K–2 MAP Test?
The test covers two main subjects:
Reading Section
- Sounds & Phonics – Rhyming, syllables, and recognizing letter sounds
- Print Awareness – Understanding how books work and reading order
- Word Meaning – Learning about word parts, synonyms, and categories
- Comprehension – Listening to stories and answering questions about them

The MAP Test for Grade 1 is made up of 43 items and typically takes about 25–40 minutes to complete. Screening assessments take approximately 30 minutes, while skills checklists vary in length. All assessments are untimed.
Are there Any Special Features for Young Children?

The test can be used for children from kindergarten to second grade for those learners in second grade who cannot yet read.
When is the MAP Testing for 1st Grade Given?

How is the MAP Growth K–2 Scored?
The MAP Growth Test uses something called a RIT score to show your child's skill level in each subject, like math or reading. These NWEA MAP scores are not based on grade level—it simply shows what your child is ready to learn next. Each question on the test has a difficulty level. Your child's final score shows the level where they can answer about half the questions correctly. Your child will get a separate score for each subject, which helps identify where they are doing well and where they may need more support. Why is the MAP Test Important?

What is the Gifted and Talented MAP Score for Kindergarten and 1st Grade?
In many gifted programs a child must be placed in the 95th percentile with their MAP testing scores. As the student gets older programs will factor in the amount of growth the student shows.
2025 Average Gifted and Talented MAP Scores
- Kindergarten: RIT scores in the 152–160 range for math and 149–157 for reading.
- First Grade: RIT scores in the 172–181 range for math and 169–177 for reading.
